Diavik Diamond Mine Grand Opening - July 21, 2003
|
Canada's second diamond mine, Diavik, commissioned late last year, formally opened on Saturday, July 19, at Lac de Gras,
in the Northwest Territories. Located 300 km northeast of Yellowknife and 30 km southeast of the Ekati diamond mine it has been almost
a decade since the kimberlites were first discovered there. The opening ceremony for the mine was attended by some
250 guests including representatives of the CAD1.3 billion mine’s investors, federal and territorial governments,
aboriginal leaders, community representatives, the media, and many others. The mine is a 60-40 JV between
Rio Tinto
plc and Aber Diamond Corporation.
