RGC: Project Experience
The Granites Gold Mine
Northern Territory, Australia

Old windmill, Granites
Client:

Newmont Tanami Pty. Ltd.

Project Description:

The Granites Gold Mine is located approximately 550km northwest of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia. Ore was mined from a series of open cut and underground operations on site from the mid-1980's until 2001. The Granites mill continues to process ore from a nearby satellite site using a conventional carbon-in-pulp process. Thickened tailings have been stored in a combination of paddock style facilities and mined-out pits.

Robertson GeoConsultants Inc. was retained by Newmont Tanami Pty. Ltd. to carry out a detailed hydrogeological review and assessment of the current and potential future impacts of the Granites tailings operations on the local groundwater system. The review covered several years of groundwater monitoring data and geochemical characterization work of tailings and waste rock. The existing groundwater monitoring program was reviewed and recommendations were made to improve its effectiveness. Robertson GeoConsultants Inc. continues to assist in the routine monitoring of the site.

In December 2005, Robertson GeoConsultants Inc. conducted a detailed hydrogeological investigation at the Granites Gold Mine which included the drilling and installation of 17 monitoring bores and numerous hydraulic tests. The data collected during the investigation was used to further delineate current impacts and develop management strategies for minimizing future impacts. This included an evaluation of options for continued tailings storage on site. More recently, Robertson GeoConsultants Inc. has designed and installed a preliminary seepage pumpback system for the mined-out Bunkers Hill Pit, slated for tailings storage in early 2007.
